STALKERS - Part 6

The key was sticking in the lock. It took Adrian more mental presence than he currently had available to open his front door. It had been a long day. When he got into his front room it felt strange. He couldn’t put his finger on it at first because – well there was stuff everywhere. Adrian lived in an organised mess. He could never be accused of being a minimalist. Still, there was something wrong and he couldn’t figure out what. Then he realised. It was the smell. He could smell coffee, feint and not recent. But there was a definite aroma of coffee. He walked into the kitchen and put his hand on the kettle, it was still warm. Boiled within the last hour at least.

He walked carefully over to the window and looked outside to see if he could see anyone. He noticed the lights were off at Lucy’s place. She must be working the night shift. He went back over to the sink and saw it was empty. Now Adrian wasn’t a slob, not at all, but he also knew he had washing up in his sink when he left for work.

He pulled out his phone and dialled Grey’s number.

“I saw you less than an hour ago.” She answered.

“That’s how you answer the phone?”

“is Laura Batty hassling you again?”

“Her name is Lucy, and no, she’s not home.”

“This isn’t a booty call is it?”

“I don’t think you know what a booty call is.” He smiled at her unworldliness and then remembered why he called.

“Someone’s been in my house. My kettle’s still warm.”

“Make sure all your windows and doors are locked before you go to bed Miley.”

“Maybe I’m just being paranoid.”

“We have instincts for a reason, trust yours. If you think somethings off, it’s off.”

“Ok. See you in the morn.” He hung up.

His phone rang again. It was Lucy. He deliberated what to do but decided that he had no option but to answer it. She was crying.

“Lucy?”

“Adrian? Oh my god Adrian, can you come over? I can’t be here alone! I’m so scared. He’s been here again!”

“Ok don’t panic. I’ll call it in.”

“Please, he sent me a photo. I got home early and I had a headache so I went to bed for a nap. I just woke up and this photo message was waiting for me. Please come over.” She was hysterical. “I’ll send you the picture.”

She hung up, moments later Adrian's phone buzzed and he opened the message. There was a photo of Lucy asleep in the bed, barely covered, vulnerable. Adrian's stomach lurched with guilt as he quickly rushed over to make sure she was ok.
