Demon Dentist

Title: Demon Dentist
Author: David Walliams
Type: Hardback
Read: 14th January - 15th January 2017
Rating: 4/5
Published: 26th September 2013 by Harper Collins Chilrens Books

Darkness had come to the town. Strange things were happening in the dead of night. Children would put a tooth under their pillow for the tooth fairy, but in the morning they would wake up to find… a dead slug; a live spider; hundreds of earwigs creeping and crawling beneath their pillow.

Evil was at work. But who or what was behind it…?

This book had me hooked from the start. It's captive, gruesome and fun.
Probably darker than most of David's other books, but just as interesting.

We have Alfie, who is a young boy who not only goes to school, but has to look after his poorly father as well. Their home is in dissarry and they really have nothing but each other and their imaginations. Their story is touching.

Then we have the dentist, who visits the school, aptly named Mrs Root and who is new in town. She's evil. Strange looking and gives out candy to children. Totally not what a dentist would really do without other motives. Then we have Gabz, who is a feisty girl who quickly makes an unlikely friendship with Alife. Together, they're going to work out why children are being left vile gifts instead of money after loosing their teeth.

It's a fun story, like i said, much darker than previous books by David. It's a quick read with pretty drawings throught. I liked the two friends and enjoyed their little tug of war against each other. I even, in an oddway enjoyed the dentist. Although, I probably wouldn't read this story to children who are frightened of going. It will certainly put them off.

My favourite line in this book "we are going to have one hell of a story to tell our children" - its the cutest thing ever. Really recommend this for both adults and children.

Gangsta Granny

Title: Gangsta Granny
Author: David Walliams
Type: Paperback
Read: 29th February - 2nd March 2016
Rating: 5/5

Our hero Ben is bored beyond belief after he is made to stay at his grandma’s house. She’s the boringest grandma ever: all she wants to do is to play Scrabble, and eat cabbage soup. But there are two things Ben doesn’t know about his grandma.
1) She was once an international jewel thief.
2) All her life, she has been plotting to steal the Crown Jewels, and now she needs Ben’s help…

David Walliams has some very catching childrens books out there. This is the third of his I've read and probably the one I've wanted to read the longest. I first knew of this book, from the TV movie/show thing which was based off this book. I remember loving it so much.

The book is of a young boy called Ben, who is sent every friday night to his Grandmas house. He doesn't like going for his grandma loves cabbage and scrabble. All of which to a young boy are boring or vile. But one night Ben discovers his nan is an international jewel theif and together they consipire to take the most precious jewels the world knows. The Crown Jewels.

It's a fun book, with lots of wonderful drawings throughout. I enjoyed reading this as much as watching the TV programme. The ending of the book is just as sad though.

If you're to pick up any of David's books, I'd recommend this one first.

The Deep

Title: The Deep
Author: Nick Cutter
Type: Paperback
Read: 10th January - 15th January 2016
Rating: 3/5
Published: 8th October by Headline

A plague is destroying the world's population. The 'Gets makes people forget. First it's the small things, like where you left your keys ... then the not-so-small things, like how to drive. And finally your body forgets how to live.

But now an unknown substance with extraordinary power to heal has been discovered in the depths of the Pacific Ocean. Nicknamed ambrosia, it might just be the miracle cure the world has been praying for.

A research lab has been established eight miles below the sea's surface, but all contact with the team has been lost. Dr Luke Nelson's brother is down there and as desperation for a cure outweighs common sense, he agrees to descend through the lightless fathoms ... perhaps to face an evil blacker than anything he could have imagined.

When this book appeared on bookbridgr i didn't hesitate to request a copy. It sounded really intreguing from the go. I wanted to know more about 'the gets' and what it involved and what they were planning to do to cure it. What i got was something a little mixed.

The book is dark, its very messed up. Seriously you have to have one crazy imagination to think of half of the twisted things that go on in this book. But i did enjoy reading it. It was additive. We meet Luke who has been sent from Iowa to the bottom of the ocean. He's brother is working eight miles below to try and find a cure for the gets. Being at such a distance below the surface, with nothing but darkness surounding them, it messes with the occupants minds. Although most if not all are in total denial of such thing. They're all hiding it in their own crazy ways.

I loved the idea of this book. I don't think i've read anything thats been based under the sea. It's distrubing. It does give you the heebyjeebies of the dark. It messes with your mind too. Thats brilliant. But perhaps i drifted off from this as I wanted to find out much more of Lukes little boy who was taken years before. I want him and Alice to escape and get back to the surface. I wanted Luke and Clayton to make up. They did i guess, but I want them to get out together.

What disappointed me was the ending. And it's whats made me so confused about this book. I have no idea what i read. The ending threw everything out of the water for me. Did it fit? I'm not sure. I guess madness took over the situation and perhaps the ending was fitting. I am still so torn what it really meant. We also never actually find out much more about 'the gets' which this was the basis for the book.

Overall it was good. Its freakishly scary and dark.

July Book Haul

This month I went a little book crazy. It was allowed, I mean, it's birthday month. What better things to recieve or treat thy self to, than books. Lots of pretty books. Bargain books too! It was also a bad month for reading, I've just not been able to focus and have been on the same book for weeks.

  1. Gypsy Boy - Mikey Walsh
  2. The Last Testament - Sam Bourne
  3. Whistledown Woman - Josephine Cox
  4. A Piece of Cake - Cupcake Brown
  5. Charmed Lives - Susannah Bates
  6. Twilight (Twilight #1) - Stephenie Meyer
  7. New Moon (Twilight #2) - Stephenie Meyer
  8. Eclipse (Twlight #3) - Stephenie Meyer
  9. The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner (Twilight #3.5) - Stephenie Meyer
  10. Breaking Dawn (Twilight #4) - Stephenie Meyer
  11. Gangsta Granny - David Walliams
  12. Sense & Sensibility - Jane Austen
  13. Alice's Adventures in Wonderland & Through the Looking Glass - Lewis Carroll
  14. An Englishwoman in New York - Anne-Marie Casey
  15. Still Alice - Lisa Genova
  16. A Room with a View - E.M. Forster
  17. The Girls - Lisa Jewell
  18. Do Not Disturb (Deanna Madden #2) - A.R. Torre
  19. The Hunt - Tim Lebbon
  20. The Other Child - Lucy Atkins
I've never been interested in the Twilight Saga, sparkly vampires do not interest me at all however I was given New Moon with a few other books, then figured I would need to buy the first to really understand the storyline. So then opted to get all books in the series from either charity shops or boot sales. I refused to buy new, but I did want the collection to match.
I've also discovered the gorgeous range of Penguin Enlgish Library books, so i'm slowly falling in love with the simple yet stunning covers of these books. I've got three out of i believe one hundred and fifty issued. I think I've alot of saving up to do to buy them all. I do struggle with classics, so i've opted for books that I've never read and therefore I dont' know alot about.
When i found out there was going to be a sequal to 'Girl in 6E' i had to pre-order and was so excited to recieve 'Do Not Disturb' on release day. I love the story line of Deanna and I can't wait to get back into it. Plus theres a third book out in November ish time, so that will be preordered soon.

Overall, lots of pretty awesome, very different to each other books.
