Day Four

Title: Day Four
Author: Sarah Lotz
Type: Paperback
Read: 19th November - 5th December 2016
Rating: 4/5
Published: 21st May 2015 by Hodder

Four days into a five day singles cruise on the Gulf of Mexico, the ageing ship Beautiful Dreamer stops dead in the water. With no electricity and no cellular signals, the passengers and crew have no way to call for help. But everyone is certain that rescue teams will come looking for them soon. All they have to do is wait. That is, until the toilets stop working and the food begins to run out. When the body of a woman is discovered in her cabin the passengers start to panic. There's a murderer on board the Beautiful Dreamer... and maybe something worse.

A crusise ship from hell. Three days of plain sailing the fourth, turns into a nightmare. Why? Who's behind it and what exactly aren't people telling the guests.

This is the follow up book to 'The Three' which i totally adored and recommend you read. However 'Day Four' whilst the basis of this book interested me, the story totally confused me at the very end.

The story runs a little clearer than that of 'The Three' but I'm still unsure what happened. We are told from different characters view points. The phsyic, her assistant, some nut job kid out the prove she's a fraud. The chamber maid and the security, also a sweet old couple who plan on killing themselves.

When the cruise ship first stops the passagers aren't worried, they're provided with updates and surely they'll get it all fixed. When the days start to drag on, food, water and even toilets are scarce, tempers flare and hell breaks loose. Whilst all this is happening, a physic, who couldn't do much before, can suddenly perform for days and gather a huge crowd.

I liked the idea, i just found the ending extremely confusing. Like, what happened. Why did people suddenly leave the ship for a private island, how did it even start back up again?

Three is the better book.

A Room With A View

Title: A Room With A View
Author: E.M. Forster
Type: Paperback
Read: 30th October - 16th November 2016
Rating: 2/4
Published: 27th September 2012 by Penguin Books

Lucy has her rigid, middle-class life mapped out for her until she visits Florence with her uptight cousin Charlotte, and finds her neatly ordered existence thrown off balance. Her eyes are opened by the unconventional characters she meets at the Pension Bertolini: flamboyant romantic novelist Eleanor Lavish, the Cockney Signora, curious Mr Emerson and, most of all, his passionate son George.Lucy finds herself torn between the intensity of life in Italy and the repressed morals of Edwardian England, personified in her terminally dull fiancé Cecil Vyse. Will she ever learn to follow her own heart?

I'm terrible with classics. I know my limits and these books test them.
I brought this because i liked the 'penguin english library' editions and they looked very sleek and stunning. I've quite a few. However i always struggle reading classics. They never seem to capture my attention or i gradually fall asleep reading them.

I've marked this as two stars because I've read it and I've not the foggiest idea of what I actually read. BUT... i will re-read this one day. Perhaps i need to read it in the summer time when the nights are lighter and not winter when its so cold.

The Beast Within: A Tale of Beauty's Prince

Title: The Beast Within: A Tale of Beauty's Prince
Author: Serena Valentino
Type: Paperback
Read: 28th October - 29th October 2016
Rating: 4/5
Published: 2016 by Parragon Books
A cursed prince sits alone in a secluded castle. Few have seen him, but those who claim they have say his hair is wild and nails are sharp--like a beast's! But how did this prince, once jovial and beloved by the people, come to be a reclusive and bitter monster? And is it possible that he can ever find true love and break the curse that has been placed upon him?

I love love love beauty and the beast. It's one of my all time favourite disney films ever. So when i discovered this book, i had to get it. Firstly i have to say that the cover is utterly stunning. It's captivating and you want to read it. It's the beast. But on the other side, you have the prince.

This is just a re-telling of the film. So whilst it has bits that are somewhat reconisable from the film, its centered around why the beast became cursed. How that effected everything and everyone around him. How slowly even he couldnt' remember a time before being the beast. How the servants were slowly disappearing before him, only to be turned into thei objects we know and love (Mrs.Potts, Cogsworth..).

The prince is pretty shallow, he wants someone to love him, they don't need to be bright, they don't even need to do anything. Just be a dumb gal. But after breaking the heart of a girl all because she worked on a farm, he is cursed by three witches. Find true love, which is both recieved and given, by his 21st birthday and the curse will be lifted. If not, he will remain an evil beast forever.

The interesting part of this story for me, was that once the curse was put into place, the effects of it, didn't instantly happen. I think maybe thats what we believed happened in the film. But in this take, the curse takes a while to take hold. Gradually the prince turns older and more tired, lashes out more. He's servants disappear. He tries to fall in love but its not real.

I also liked that we got to see or have appearances by other disney villans. Ursula being one. It was a very good mix on the story. At just over 200 pages this isnt' a long book. The writing is pretty large too. I can see why some people dislike this telling but i think imagination is a wonderful thing.

Pretty Is

Title: Pretty Is
Author: Maggie Mitchell
Type: Paperback
Read: 22nd October - 27th October 2016
Rating: 3/5
Published: 21st April 2016 by Orion

Everyone thought we were dead. What else could they think?

One summer, nearly twenty years ago, two twelve year olds
were abducted and kept captive in the forest.
There they formed a bond that could never be broken.
What really happened in the woods that summer?

I liked the basis of this book and for some reason the title. Pretty Is. It's so simple.

I enjoyed the mystery part around the kidnapping of the two girls, who were only 12 and very pretty. The book is split over three sections, with the stories going from one girl to the other. The second part is a take on the book wrote by one of the characters, Lois. Which worked and didn't.

The girls, whilst fair enough were only 12, seemed at times not to worry about being taken. They never asked questions, they never wanted to run, they just accepted. They were both eager to please the kidnapper, who in return, didn't really want alot from them. Just company and for them to stop with the things that they knew best, pagents and spelling bees. But there was nothing else beyond that. I think that was the hard part of the story. The not understanding their desire to stay. Anyone who was taken, weather they got into a car willingly at first, would / should still question why they are not going home.

The story went on to how it changed the two girls, how their lives turned out because of this. After being released, neither girl seen the other. They went off on two different paths in life. One becoming an actress, and changing her name. The other a lecturer and a writer - both still caught up with the kidnapper they named Zed.

Part of me wanted the girls to just grow up (and they were adults!). But even meeting up due to Lois book being turned into a film and that the other girl was going to be acting in the film, they both seemd to want to be the better. They both kinda vived for attention about who was Zed's favourite. I think they were still crazy and no-one around them could ever understand the other. It was just them two against the world.

A Wizard of Earthsea

Title: A Wizard of Earthsea
Author: Ursula Le Guin
Type: Paperback
Read: 16th October - 21st October 2016
Rating: 3/5
Published: 17th July 2010 by Puffin

The first book of Earthsea is a tale of wizards, dragons and terrifying shadows. The island of Gont is a land famous for wizards. Of these, some say the greatest - and surely the greatest voyager - is the man called Sparrowhawk. As a reckless, awkward boy, he discovered the great power that was in him - with terrifying consequences. Tempted by pride to try spells beyond his means, Sparrowhawk lets loose an evil shadow-beast in his land. Only he can destroy it, and the quest leads him to the farthest corner of Earthsea.

I think i struggled with this book far too much than i should have. It's an interesting fantasy novel, but for me the chapters were far too long. I like short, sharp bursts.

I novel is good, it just gave me a hard time concentrating. The young character i had high hopes for. I wanted him to become a great wizard. But he seemed a little niave at times and that shown in the face of summoning the evil spirits.

The book then goes on with him trying to run away from said spirit who takes on a formation of the character, so its a clash. But then deciding you can't always run away from your problems, our hunted, becomes the huntee.

A interesting book nontheless but probably needs another read to truely understand.

Dumplin'

Title: Dumplin'
Author: Julie Murphy
Type: Hardback
Read: 14th October - 16th October 2016
Rating: 4/5
Published: 15th September 2015 by Balzer + Bray

Self-proclaimed fat girl Willowdean Dickson (dubbed “Dumplin’” by her former beauty queen mom) has always been at home in her own skin. Her thoughts on having the ultimate bikini body? Put a bikini on your body. With her all-American beauty best friend, Ellen, by her side, things have always worked…until Will takes a job at Harpy’s, the local fast-food joint. There she meets Private School Bo, a hot former jock. Will isn’t surprised to find herself attracted to Bo. But she is surprised when he seems to like her back.

Instead of finding new heights of self-assurance in her relationship with Bo, Will starts to doubt herself. So she sets out to take back her confidence by doing the most horrifying thing she can imagine: entering the Miss Clover City beauty pageant—along with several other unlikely candidates—to show the world that she deserves to be up there as much as any twiggy girl does. Along the way, she’ll shock the hell out of Clover City—and maybe herself most of all.

I loved this book. Dumplin, or Willowdean (love the name btw!), is a girl who's big. She knows she doesnt fit in with societys view on normal, but she's happy. Her best friend is her polar opposite, but they work well together. So what happens when Willows crush, actually likes her back? What happens, when her best friend doesn't speak to her and her mums set on clearing out aunty Lucy's things before Dumplin has even gotten her head around it all.

She sets out to take part in the Miss Clover City beauty pageant. And because of her "new" found confidence, three other girls tag along with her.

Okay, so what i loved about the story, besides the name Willowdean. The main character knows she's not perfect. Willow loves Dolly Parton. And she learns that you don't have to follow the crowd. It's okay to be slightly behind your friends in all departments of life. It's okay to not be the first to be kissed, its okay to be jealous of your best friend. It's good to find new friends.

What I didn't like, sometimes i felt Willow was a little selfish, espeically when Millie and co are also trying out for the pagent because Willow is. I think at times when they relied on her for support and guidance, she seemd very into herself and didn't think of how serious she should be taking it.

But i do love the message of this book. It's confident, its positive. Society tries to put us all into a category, big, little, tall, short, etc... but really we're just human. We're all alike and different at the same time. Being ourselves is more important than what society wants us to be.

The Art of Being Normal

Title: The Art of Being Normal
Author: Lisa Williamson
Type: Hardback
Read: 10th October - 13th October 2016
Rating: 5/5
Published: 1st January 2015 by David Flicking Books

Two boys. Two secrets.
David Piper has always been an outsider. His parents think he’s gay. The school bully thinks he’s a freak. Only his two best friends know the real truth – David wants to be a girl.
On the first day at his new school Leo Denton has one goal – to be invisible. Attracting the attention of the most beautiful girl in year eleven is definitely not part of that plan.
When Leo stands up for David in a fight, an unlikely friendship forms. But things are about to get messy. Because at Eden Park School secrets have a funny habit of not staying secret for long…

I won this book forever ago. I went into it, without knowing a lot, except one boy wanted to be a girl and the other was keeping a big secret. Now for the life of me, i never clocked onto said secret till it was revealed. Either i'm slow or the book handled the reveal great.

I adored David as a character, he's innocence was wonderful and he's friends were great. I loved when he became Kate and the difference in the two people were mindblowing. Kate was confident, and reveled in the attention, in actually being someone who she wanted to be.

Leo was everything David wasn't. He was fierce, didnt' take prisoners but had a kind heart when you broke through that tough guy exterior.

Together David & Leo seemed a very unlikely pair and i enjoyed reading their change in friendship. I loved how they both understood one another and how eventually Leo gave David the confidence to tell he's family and be true to himself.

The ending of the book, with the prom and Kate and Olivia dancing was the best bit for me. I just loved the whole idea of Kate's sister slowly accepting what was going on.

The Silent Hours

Title: The Silent Hours
Author: Cesca Major
Type: Paperback
Read: 27th September - 9th October 2016
Rating: 4/5
Published: 4th June 2015 by Corvus

The Silent Hours follows three people whose lives are bound together, before war tears them apart:
Adeline, a mute who takes refuge in a convent, haunted by memories of her past;
Sebastian, a young Jewish banker whose love for the beautiful Isabelle will change the course of his life dramatically; Tristin, a nine-year-old boy, whose family moves from Paris to settle in a village that is seemingly untouched by war.
Beautifully wrought, utterly compelling and with a shocking true story at its core, The Silent Hours is an unforgettable portrayal of love and loss.

A heartbreaking tale of love, survival during the war. We are told the story via different people and its as the story progresses that you realise how the characters are linked.

I think the story of the sleepy little village in France is truely horrendous, having escaped the war, their town was destoryed because it was just there. No other reason. This book, is partly based on the true story there. How Cesca writes this, you would almost imagine the whole thing happened.

I think Adeline and Isobels, were the most touching of stories, especially the ending. A book has never made me feel quiet so lost before.

This book is truely wonderful, the author used to be a history teacher and you can see that she has delved into this with all the details. I can't wait to see what is next.

Through The Woods

Title: Through The Woods
Author: Emily Carroll
Type: Paperback
Read: 25th September 2016
Rating: 4/5
Published: 7th May 2015 by Faber & Faber

'It came from the woods. Most strange things do.'

Five mysterious, spine-tingling stories follow journeys into (and out of?) the eerie abyss.

These chilling tales spring from the macabre imagination of acclaimed and award-winning comic creator Emily Carroll. Come take a walk in the woods and see what awaits you there...

I've always wanted to read a graphic novel. I thought i should branch out to different genres in the book world. I brought this book last year and figured the pictures were so disturbing it was definalty a book to read around aumtum/winter time.

It's a collection of short dark, twisted stories. I'm actually not sure how best to read a graphic novel, do you look at the pictures and make up your own assumptions or go with the little writing there and interpret it another way. I was a bit stuck and kind of flew through it. I'm not sure if much even went into my mind. It just reminded me of a comic book.

However i must say the pictures are wonderful, even if they are scary. They're gruesome, twisted, dark and can if read at the right time of year, mess with your mind. I usually have an overactive imagination,so i was expecting nightmares after this.

I'm actually tempted to find out more about the author, to see what other books are out there.

The BFG

Title: The BFG
Author: Roald Dahl
Type: Paperback
Read: 23rd - 24th September 2016
Rating: 5/5
Published: 16th June 2016 by Puffin (originally released 1982)

On a dark, silvery moonlit night, Sophie is snatched from her bed by a giant. Luckily it is the Big Friendly Giant, the BFG, who only eats snozzcumbers and glugs frobscottle.

But there are other giants in Giant Country: fifty foot brutes who gallop far and wide every night to find human beans to eat. Sophie decides she must stop them once and for all. And the BFG is going to help her!

I love Roald Dahl and have enjoyed his stories for many years. The BFG reminds me of my childhood and the fun of reading stories of magic. This is the film tie in addition and has some lovely drawings throughout.

The story of Sophie and the BFG, eventually saving the world from the evil human eating giants, is fun, its imaginative. As an adult you can see some references, that probably would be questioned if printed in todays age, but still, overall its a story both adults and children will enjoy.

Everyone needs a little bit of magic.

PS. I read this in a day, then accidently got the book caught up in washing and sadly it never survied a washing cycle...

Frozen: Book of the Film

Title: Frozen Book of the Film
Author: Sarah Nathan
Type: Paperback
Read: 24th September 2016
Rating: 4/5
Published: 2013 by Parragon Books

FROZEN is the story of Anna, who sets off on an epic journey to save her kingdom....

Teaming up with an adventurer named Kristoff, Anna searches for her sister, Elsa, whose icy powers have trapped the kingdom in an eternal winter. Discover the story of the film inside!

This is a short book adaption of the film. It reads pretty much like the film with a few extra tweaks throughout. The story does have some lines from the songs sung and its hard to read them without singing them.

If you enjoyed the film, this book is pretty much a must have for the collection. It also has some lovely stills from the film midway. A cute short story.

Every Fifteen Minutes

Title: Every Fifteen Minutes
Author: Lisa Scottoline
Type: Paperback
Read: 15th September - 22nd September 2016
Rating: 3/5
Published: 19th November 2015 by Headline

Psychologist Dr Eric Parrish is unwittingly under threat.
Recently separated from his wife, Eric is learning to become a single parent to his seven-year-old daughter, and life is far from straightforward.

Now Eric has a new patient who could be a severe danger to others. And he must make a decision that will leave deadly consequences in its wake. The clock is ticking, and someone is hell bent on destroying Eric's practice, his family, his life.
But how can you defend yourself against an enemy you don't know?
And can you ever win a game you don't even know you are playing?

Requested from bookbridgr ages ago, it seemed like the ultimate thriller.

I really wanted to enjoy the book but i felt very let down. The last few chapters, were the fun parts, the ones that got you interested, everything else before that, seemed to drag on.

At times I got slightly confused and I also felt that Dr Eric really had a load of bad luck all at once. Like, pretty unbelievable bad luck. It seemed a little extreme. Then bits at the end totally confused me, that I don't think, i ever thought for a minute that the story would go that way.

I'm sure if the added extra details were taken out, this book would be fantastic. But its too much for what happens.

First Comes Love

Title: First Comes Love
Author: Emily Giffin
Type: Paperback (ARC)
Read: 7th September - 14th September
Rating: 4/5
Published: 22nd September 2016 by Hodder

What happens when love, marriage and children don't come in the expected order? Fifteen years after the tragic death of their older brother splintered Josie and Meredith's already fragile relationship, the two sisters are following very different paths.

Hardworking, reserved Meredith thought she'd done it all the right way round - married the perfect man, had the perfect daughter - but now she's wondering if she got the love part wrong.
Impulsive and spirited Josie has been single for years. She wants a child so much that she's preparing to head straight for the baby carriage all on her own.

As the anniversary of their tragedy looms and secrets from the past surface, Josie and Meredith must come to terms with their own choices. Perhaps they'll find that they need each other more than they know..

I recieved a copy of this book from bookbridgr. I requested it because i thought the cover was cute. I did read some reviews on this book prior to going in and it was a mixed bag. But I actually really enjoyed this story.

Told from two sisters view points, the chapters are alternating between the two girls, Meredith and Josie. They annoy each other, Meredith seems to think she's had the rough end of the deal with life and believes Josie gets away with everything. Never having to learn her lesson or deal with the consequences. We learn how the effect of their brother Daniels death had on them, how each were holding on to their own secrets about that fateful night.

My favourite character was Josie, i did love her no care attitude and her get go. SHe wasn't afraid of doing things her own way or on her own. Meredith, did annoy me, with her constant moaning and belittling of people. But thats siblings for you.

I can see why people didn't enjoy the book, but i honestly thought it was really good. Perhaps i can relate to both characters slightly and therefore could understand situations with them.

How to Fall in Love

Title: How to Fall in Love
Author: Cecelia Ahern
Type: Hardback
Read: 1st September - 6th September 2016
Rating: 3/5
Published: 24th October 2013 by Harper Collins Publishers Ltd

She has just two weeks. Two weeks to teach him how to fall in love – with his own life. Adam Basil and Christine Rose are thrown together late one night, when Christine is crossing the Halfpenny Bridge in Dublin. Adam is there, poised, threatening to jump. Adam is desperate – but Christine makes a crazy deal with him. His 35th birthday is looming and she bets him she can show him that life is worth living before then.

Despite her determination, Christine knows what a dangerous promise she’s made. Against the ticking of the clock, the two of them embark on wild escapades, grand romantic gestures and some unlikely late-night outings. Slowly, Christine thinks Adam is starting to fall back in love with his life.

But has she done enough to change his mind for good? And is that all that’s starting to happen?
Cecelia Ahern, is without a doubt one of my all time favourite authors. I couldn't remember if I ever read this book so picked it off the shelf. I'm sad to say, this book was a so-so for me. Which for this author, is a first. I'm actually gutted because I usually love everything Cecelia writes.

I'm not sure what it was about the book really. Parts kept niggling at me and I could enjoy it. Part of me thinks it was to do with the topic; suicide. However whilst I have no issues in books writing about such thing, I do think that the idea of someone possibly saving another person from attempting to kill themselves in under two weeks, is a little unrealistic.

Christine, is our main character who witnesses a man shoot himself, then a day or two later manages to prevent Adam, from killing himself on a bridge. Christine makes a promise to Adam that she will teach him how to love life again. Now this is a complete stranger, promising another what inevitably is the impossible. Especially when said person, is also going through the breakup for her own marriage.

I just don't know. There were parts in the story that I did enjoy but then there were parts, where Christine was falling in love with Adam, that I sometimes wanted to her slow down.

Like i said, I adore all books written by Cecelia, I just wasn't a huge fan of this one.
