Crush

Title: Crush
Author: Eve Ainsworth
Type: Paperback
Read: 10th June 2017
Rating: 4/5
Published: 3rd March 2016 by Scholastic

Love hurts ... but should it hurt this much? Reeling from her mum's sudden departure, Anna finds the comfort she needs in her blossoming relationship with Will. He's handsome and loving, everything Anna has always dreamt of. He's also moody and unpredictable, pushing her away from her friends, her music. He wants her to be his and his alone. He wants her to be perfect. Anna's world is closing in. But threatening everything is a dark secret that not even Will can control... Eve Ainsworth's gripping second novel is a pitch-perfect exploration of love at its most powerful, addictive and destructive.

This story made me feel so uncomfortable reading. I think the way Will kept getting at Anna was creapy and scary. This book is about a toxic relationship, where the school stud gets with the girl, no-one would really notice. Anna is that girl. She's struggling anyways then to add her first real boyfriend to the picture it just gets far too much. Especially when the boyfriend is a pretty caluclated evil idiot.

I think this book is good to bring awareness around situations like this. Because sometimes we are blind to it, as if its not happening to us, then do we notice? But i think this book, and how Will took time to show his true colours freak me. He was all nice at first and then slowly made Anna alienated from her friends, her family and the music she loved, all because he wanted her to love him more than anyone and anything else.

Its tough. I think this book is a good one for teens, but may need a trigger warning if anyone who has been in an abusive relationship may read.

Library of Souls

Title: Libaray of Souls
Author: Ransom Riggs
Type: Paperback
Read: 3rd June - 9th June 2017
Rating: 5/5
Published: 22nd November 2015 by Quirk Books

As the story opens, sixteen-year-old Jacob discovers a powerful new ability, and soon he’s diving through history to rescue his peculiar companions from a heavily guarded fortress. Accompanying Jacob on his journey are Emma Bloom, a girl with fire at her fingertips, and Addison MacHenry, a dog with a nose for sniffing out lost children. They’ll travel from modern-day London to the labyrinthine alleys of Devil’s Acre, the most wretched slum in all of Victorian England. It’s a place where the fate of peculiar children everywhere will be decided once and for all.

Oh my gosh. What a finale to the series. This book is full of action from the go.
A war going on with the peculiars survival in the balance. Its a do or die. Its a situation that Emma and Jacob can only try and get everyone out alive whilst beating off everyone else in the process. Its bloody fantastic.

We learn about Devils Acre and meet more wights and hallowgasts, we meet Sharon who is a pretty friendly giant overall. The children meet up with Miss Peregrines other brother and together, they try to rescue everyone. There are many twists and turns in this book and you can't stop reading. I wanted more, and more and it was given.

The ending was almost sad then i was happy. But its a pretty damn good ending. I realy enjoyed the trip into the perculiar world. There are some pictures within this book too, though fewer than pervious but they do give a little extra to the story itself.

Overall a cracking series.

Hollow City

Title: Hollow City
Author: Ransom Riggs
Type: Paperback
Read: 1st June - 2nd June 2017
Rating: 5/5
Published: 24th February 2015 by Quirk Books

This second novel begins in 1940, immediately after the first book ended. Having escaped Miss Peregrine’s island by the skin of their teeth, Jacob and his new friends must journey to London, the peculiar capital of the world. Along the way, they encounter new allies, a menagerie of peculiar animals, and other unexpected surprises.

Complete with dozens of newly discovered (and thoroughly mesmerizing) vintage photographs, this new adventure will delight readers of all ages.

The second book in the Miss Peregines collection, see the chilren travel to london.

I enjoyed this book so much, probably more than the first, as we got a glimpse into life oustide of the island, we got a glimpse into how the characters behave and interact with each other and their habits. The chilren along the way find other peculiars, both children and animals and its wonderful to see them learn from them and work together.

Again this book is action packed and will not disappoint. It still has some perculiar photos throughout, which i will admit if you read this in the dark and your imagination is somewhat, la la, then it can send you crazy... i slept with some fairylights on!!

Seriously though, its a cracking follow up and i'm not sure how its going to end!

Miss Peregrine's Home for Perculiar Children

Title: Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children
Author: Ransom Riggs
Type: Paperback
Read: 30th May - 31st May 2017
Rating: 5/5
Published: 4th June 2013 by Quirk Books

A mysterious island. An abandoned orphanage. A strange collection of curious photographs. It all waits to be discovered in Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, an unforgettable novel that mixes fiction and photography in a thrilling reading experience. As our story opens, a horrific family tragedy sets sixteen-year-old Jacob journeying to a remote island off the coast of Wales, where he discovers the crumbling ruins of Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. As Jacob explores its bedrooms and hallways, it becomes clear that Miss Peregrine's children were more than just peculiar. They may have been dangerous. They may have been quarantined on a deserted island for good reason. And somehow—impossible though it seems—they may still be alive.

I really loved this book. I really wasn't sure what to expect when I got it. But i devoured it within 24hrs, it was just that wonderful.

I think the book mixed with the photograhs is a great idea. It really adds effects to the storyline, just gives you that little bit more to add to the imagination. I enjoyed reading about Jacob and his grandfather Abe, and working out what made him peculiar. Through the second half of the book, or least when they get to the island in wales, that things do start to pick up.

I relly enjoyed meeting with the other peculiars and i think having them around would be pretty fun. It was an interesting mix between past and present and then the drama that ensued with the taking of Miss Peregrine. I do think it would have been nice to learn more about each of the peculiar chilren, but that would make for a huge book..and probably distract us from the storyline.

I really can't wait to see what the second book is about. I'm also very tempted to watch the film. Just to see how it brings all of this to life.

Bartholomew Neil is thirty-eight and lost. He’s lived his whole life, up till a few weeks ago, with his devoted mum, but now she has died Bartholomew has no idea how to be on his own. His grief counsellor, Wendy, says he needs to find his flock and leave the nest. But how does a man whose whole life has been grounded learn how to fly? So Bartholomew turns to Richard Gere, the man his mum adored from afar, in the hope he can offer some answers. In Bartholomew’s letters to Richard Gere he explores philosophy and friendship, alien abduction and the mystery of women. The letters also reveal his heart-breaking need of a family, but when Bartholomew does manage to assemble a motley family of sorts, he seems to have taken on more than he bargained for . . .

I actually really liked this book. It was quirky, light-hearted and just fun to read.
Told in a series of letter to the actor Richard Gere, we learn of Bartholomew's life with his mother who has sadly passed away. We see a man learn how to live on his own wihtout someone there to constantly asure him and care for him.

It's a touching book, Bartholomew is an only child (he's technically an adult in this book) and never knew his father. His mother suffered with cancer and her only love was the actor Richard Gere and her church of who we meet Father McNamee.

As Bartholomew learns to talk about his feelings and Father McNamee learns to deal with his past, they embark on a trip to Canada with Elizabeth and Max who are too learning to deal with their demons. ITs a nice story of learning to live again, finding who you are and making friends in the process.

Gorsky

Title: Gorsky
Author: Vesna Goldsworthy
Type: Paperback
Read: 15th May - 22nd May 2017
Rating: 4/5
Published: 3rd September 2015 by Vintage

London dances to the tune of Gorsky’s billions. The most enigmatic of oligarchs, Gorsky desires and gets the best of everything and now he has his sights set on Natalia. That she is already married is an inconvenient detail.
Nick works in a shabby-chic bookshop. When Gorsky approaches him with the commission of a lifetime, Nick suddenly gains access to the world of the wealthy and the beautiful. But this privilege comes at a price and Nick finds his new life suddenly fraught with danger...

I picked up this book because the cover was striking. It was red. I picked up another red book at the time and figured it seemed interesting. Probably something that went over my head but I knew i'd ger around to it sooner or later.

Well this book is pretty good. It's a spin on the Great Gatsby and i do love that book. We meet Nick, who works in a book shop an is commissioned to create the best library for Gorsky that money can buy. It's a tale of russian billionaires and a love not forgotten over the years.

I quite liked it but at times it felt like it dragged to me. But thats probably more down to me than the actual book.
